Today is going to be different. Why? Because you are going to make different choices. Let’s shake it up today and choose actions that will solve a problem, move us closer to achieving a goal, or reflect what we really want to do.
I was inspired this week by the new movie Free Guy, starring Ryan Reynolds. If you’ve already seen it, you probably noticed similarities to the 1998 movie, The Truman Show, starring Jim Carrey. In both movies, the main character realizes that his life has been planned and choreographed by other people. He had been programmed to think that he had no choices, that his life would always be the same. In Free Guy, the main character thought that he would always be a bank teller. He hadn’t considered any other choices. His sidekick, who was a security officer at the bank, and everyone else around him reinforced the illusion.
AHA!, an epiphany! The world literally opens up. In The Truman Show, a way to get past the wall, which was an illusion, appeared. In Free Guy, the way out was a bridge. Both scenarios happened because the main character started questioning what was real. The lives that had been scripted by others were suddenly perceived as just that, scripts that they had been following without question.
I’ll bet most of you have, at times, gotten into a rut of complacency. Your routine has gotten boring or frustrating or meaningless. You yearn for something new, but rocking the boat seems out of the question. How about starting with small changes. Don’t stay cooped up inside when you could be outside enjoying nature’s surprises. You could get up an hour earlier and enjoy a beautiful sunrise. This week, there will be a full moon. The October moon is called the Harvest moon or the Hunter’s moon. Many religions have their own significant meaning attached to the October full moon. Don’t miss it!
After you make some small changes in your routine, work on some goals that you have been putting off, like putting photos in albums to give to family members at Christmas. Ask someone to go with you to a local fall festival, where you can try different foods and buy unusual Christmas gifts made by local artisans. With supply shortages looming, buying local may be a great choice this year.
Make today different by making different choices.
