I’m so glad that you have joined me for the first in a weekly series of talks related to my new book, Think Your Way to Happiness: Strategies for an Enjoyable, Meaningful Life. For today’s theme, “How to Increase your Personal Power,” I’ll talk about two general ways to feel more empowered:
Most of us spend far too much time focused on other people’s actions and events outside our control. What can you control? Only what YOU are thinking, saying, and doing. Create a “to do” list of what you want to accomplish with your life. You can make it happen!
One of the most fun ways to empower yourself is to learn something new. There are so many authors who have written interesting books full of new ways of looking at life. Whenever I feel stuck, I go to Amazon books online or to my local Books A Million. Another way to get unstuck is to get out of town, literally. Sometimes, just going to a new city or crossing a state line is a source of renewal. Another way is to meet people who have interests similar to yours.
As I mention in the memoir, Maverick Woman, that I am currently writing, when I moved to Ellijay, Georgia, following a divorce, I didn’t know anyone. I asked myself, “How can I meet interesting people?” The answer was to start a book discussion group. Then I realized that I needed encouragement, support, and new ideas in my life. So, I created and facilitated a women’s personal growth group. You can bring people into your life, too.
In his 2015 book, A Curious Mind: The Secret to a Bigger Life, movie producer, Brian Grazer, wisely said, you seek out a new acquaintance because “you are genuinely interested in what she has to say, in her point of view, in her experiences.” I hope that you bring people into your life who are genuinely interested in you.
We are all learners and teachers in life. Think about starting a personal growth group, so you can share ideas with kindred spirits, other travelers on this earth who love to learn, who like to help, and who appreciate you for WHO YOU REALLY ARE.
