A place that feels comfortable and you feel that you fit in.
Finding your niche increases happy vibes exponentially. I was reminded of this last Saturday while browsing at my local Books A Million store, because that store is a niche for me.
You would think that I would say that bookstores, in general, are my niche. But not true. Whether I feel comfortable and feel like I fit in totally depends on the staff, not necessarily the books. Even though Books A Million is a chain store, our Gainesville, Georgia, store employs salespeople who are really avid readers and most of them absolutely love finding books for customers and talking about books.
One of the staff members is a young man who exudes passion in the particular section of the store where The Game of Thrones and similar books are located. My recent quest was for Assassins Creed: Brotherhood, the second in the series by author Oliver Bowden. I learned so much from this enthusiastic young man about other books in the series, how they are based on real historical events, and even that there is a movie out starring Michael Fassbender that is available on Amazon.
I have definitely found my niche. I have had experiences with other staff members there who go out of their way to find a book on a particular topic or by a particular author. You can tell they love the process. When I worked at Barnes and Noble in 2002, I loved working in the information section where I could help customers find books to help their research. One lady was searching for information about the Aramaic language because Jesus spoke Aramaic. How fascinating is that!!!
I have been in bookstores where I didn’t feel as if I fit in, like a big chain store that had a cold, impersonal atmosphere. Even though it was full of books, the environment was too formal for me to feel comfortable and the employees seemed to be there only for a paycheck.
Finding your niche is more complex that just finding a product or activity that you are interested in. Your niche might be an art gallery or store that sells old vinyl records. Maybe it’s a skate park or a yoga class. Maybe it’s an Indie theatre or being part of a theatre production.
Your niche is a reflection of WHO YOU ARE.
