De-stress alert! Stress, Stress, Stress! Seems to bombard us sometimes. Ever had the week from hell? Oh, yeah? What do you do?
You know the fight or flight response? What works for me is flight. Just get away from the craziness for a while. Drive or walk yourself toward events where positive people abound and conversation is light and cheery. “Laughter is the best medicine” really works.
Yesterday, I laughed so much at a family dinner that my giggle box turned over and I couldn’t stop laughing. On the way home, I kept thinking about the silliness that got me laughing and I laughed some more. When I got home, I laughed some more. Stress relief!!!
Another tactic is to lose yourself in a fascinating presentation or meeting interesting people who you click with immediately. Suddenly, you are swept away from our troubles and you’re completely absorbed in the delights of the present moment. My fun getaway was a plant expo full of so many varieties of plants that my mind couldn’t absorb it all. Grown by people who are so different from the mainstream, so into their obsession with the unusual that you are absolutely fascinated. To be followed by a Master Gardener presentation on fall gardening that was lively, to the point, and full of surprises. Cupcakes, for one thing. The staff gave everyone in the audience cupcakes to celebrate the presenter’s birthday. It’s like they roped me and about 30 other people into the sphere of celebration for someone they obviously liked and admired.
I was a part of a world that had been apart from mine, but now overlapped into my life and my life overlapped into their lives. And magic happened. Surrounded by curious fellow gardeners eager to learn more, more, more about their hobby or vocation. How to do this. How to do that. What do you do if this critter appeared in your garden?
Transfer my experience with my particular interest to your life. What are you passionate about? What interests you? Seek out kindred spirits and you, too, will find your happy place. Full of positive energy. Full of people going forward. People accomplishing something that makes a difference. It’s like a big, tight hug.
You flew the coop and found fun. You took flight and found happy people. Go where the happy people are and the joy of life surrounds you.
